magnetism

Magnetism, as defined by the National Geographic Society is “the force exerted by magnets when they attract or repel each other. Magnetism is caused by the motion of electric charges. Every substance is made up of tiny units called atoms. Each atom has electrons, particles that carry electric charges.”

What particles am I made up of that carry charges that magnetize me to some, and to others, repel? I’ve been thinking about this lately as certain people in my life ‘just stick’ and others drift away slowly downstream. I welcome both. Not everyone is meant to stay in my life in the same way that certain people I know, will stay with me until the end of my days. So what, if anything, makes that real, and possible, and true? Is it common interests and values? Connection and chemistry? Time and place? It’s probably some combination of all of them charging towards each other at the exact same time. But what happens when the magnetism can’t be explained? When it is only felt, and not seen? What then of atoms, and particles, and electric charges? What then of intuition?

I have no answers. I’m just a pile of feelings carrying my heart around with me as I go about letting go, letting in, and letting everything wash over me, again, and again, and again.
